On August 31, Daniel Glaser, First Secretary of the Political Section of the U.S. Embassy in China, visited the Beijing Branch of the National Institute for South China Sea Studies (NISCSS), where he met with Wu Shicun, Chairman of the Huayang Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance and Chairman of the NISCSS Academic Committee.

The two sides held in-depth discussions and exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including the latest developments in the South China Sea and the respective major concerns of China and the United States; the negative impact of the South China Sea arbitration award on the regional situation and China-Philippines relations over the past decade since its issuance; possible future developments surrounding Huangyan Dao and China’s potential responses; assessments of the Philippines’ growing infringement and provocative activities in the South China Sea; progress and prospects of the consultations on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC); the negative implications of Japan-Philippines maritime delimitation; China’s differentiated approaches to maritime issues involving Vietnam and the Philippines; and mechanisms for Track II exchanges on maritime issues between Chinese and U.S. think tanks.
