On March 28, Wu Shicun, Chairman of the Huayang Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance and Chairman of the Academic Committee of the National Institute for South China Sea Studies, attended the “Our Shared Home” Roundtable Media Event Series in Sanya.
Wu Shicun pointed out that Asia-Pacific countries should re-examine the current state of maritime security and development in the region, and that maritime order and governance amid profound changes have become core issues of common concern to regional countries. In the face of maritime hegemonism, unilateralism, and the complex realities and challenges at sea, no country can cope alone.
He stated that the concept of a maritime community with a shared future goes beyond the traditional zero-sum mindset and advocates that all countries, on the basis of mutual respect, fairness and justice, and win-win cooperation, should jointly safeguard peace and tranquility at sea and promote the sustainable development of the oceans. It provides fundamental intellectual guidance and a practical pathway for addressing the current difficulties in maritime governance, managing differences, and building consensus, and is key to breaking the current deadlock and achieving common security and development. Coastal states should, in a spirit of mutual respect, flexibility, and pragmatism, establish and improve multi-tiered channels for dialogue and communication, begin with cooperation in low-sensitivity areas, gradually build mutual trust, effectively manage differences, avoid conflict, and build the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship, and cooperation.
The “Our Shared Home” Roundtable Media Event Series was jointly organized by the Chinese Global Program Center of China Media Group, the National Institute for South China Sea Studies, and the Huayang Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance.
Experts and scholars from China, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and other countries engaged in exchanges, both online and offline, on such topics as “the Challenges of the Times for Global Order Restructuring and Ocean Governance,” “Blue Cooperation Demonstrates the Value of the Vision,” and “Building Consensus to Jointly Create a Blue Future of Security and Development.” Zhou Jian, Distinguished Research Fellow of the Huayang Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance, attended the event and participated in the interview.
On the same day, Wu Shicun also gave an interview to CCTV-4 on topics such as building a maritime community with a shared future, offsetting geopolitical confrontation through regional cooperation, and blue economy cooperation between China and ASEAN countries.
